Commercial Weight Loss Programs

Many people trying to lose weight find that doing it with others is easier. That's why millions of Americans enroll in commercial weight-loss programs each year. These programs can be helpful, but not all of them approach weight loss in a manner that's safe and effective

Before you enroll, make sure the program meets the following five criteria:

Safety. The program should ensure that you get adequate nutrition. Although diets may be low in calories, they should still provide the daily recommended amounts of nutrients without the need for unusual supplements or special foods.

Reasonable weight goals. Some people with certain health conditions may benefit from rapid weight loss. But in general, weight loss should be slow and steady. Rapid weight loss is mainly loss of fluid, not fat. Look for a program that's geared toward helping you lose 1 to 2 pounds a week. Remember: A loss of just 10 pounds can have a positive effect on your blood pressure.

Physician participation. The program should encourage consultation with your doctor. Talk with your doctor if you plan to go on a very-low-calorie diet. If you have health problems or you regularly take medication, check with your doctor before taking part in a weight loss plan.

Attention to permanent lifestyle changes. Losing weight does little good if you can't keep it off. The program also should help you improve your lifelong exercise and eating habits so you can maintain a healthful weight

Up-front costs. You should know exactly how much the program, including regular follow-up, will cost you.
